Big 7th Inning Lifts Nitros

In a game with 33 total hits and a barrage of scoring the Hornell Dodgers fell to the Wellsville Nitros 16-9. The win improves the Nitros to 22-22 while the loss brings the Dodgers to 21-23 on the year.

 

The Nitros came out and grabbed the early lead putting up two runs in the 1st. Harry Montero Jr. (Bloomfield) drove in run on a RBI groundout while Jacob Sims (Roane State CC) collected an RBI single.

 

In the 2nd, the Dodgers offense got red hot and took the lead with a six run rally. Tage Johnson (Houghton), Mike Wick (Webster), and Jack Trotman (St. John Fisher) all collected RBI singles and Adam Fitzgibbon (Saginaw Valley) collected two RBIs on a double donw the left field line. Fitzgibbon would steal home to complete the scoring in the inning.

 

The Nitros cut the Dodgers lead in the 4th on a two-out double by Sims. They tied it up with three in the 5th. Tyler Culpepper (Roane State CC) drove in one off an RBI infield single with Montero collected a two-out, two RBI single to tie the game.

 

In the 6th, the 6th, Nicolas Varda (Ashland) hit a two out single to the left center gap to give the Nitros back the lead 7-6.

 

In the 7th, the Nitros tallied eight runs to put the game out of reach.  After the Nitros had loaded the bases Sims drove in two on a single, Jacob Means (Cowley County CC) followed him with a single of his own driving in one. Sims then scored on a Dodger error while Varda hit an RBI single to right. Carson Schrode (Tennessee Martin) and Culpepper both earned RBI’s on fielders choice plays with Max Franzone (Dominican) scoring the final run with an RBI single to take the Nitros lead to 15-6

 

In the bottom half of the 7th the Dodgers chipped away at the Nitros lead putting two more runs on the board. Ricotta capitalized on a Nitros error to score with Zach Lopatka (Lackawanna) collected a RBI double to left.

 

The Nitros continued their scoring in the 8th adding another to their lead on a Varda sacrifice fly. The Dodgers got a RBI single by Ricotta in the bottom half of the inning but couldn't get any closer.

 

The Dodgers had 16 hits on the night with Trotman and Johnson both going 3-5 at the dish with one RBI a piece.

 

The Nitros had 17 hits with Sims going 4-6 at the plate with four RBI’s and Franzone going 3-5.

 

On the mound the Nitros Michael DEletto (Central Methodist) got the win with 6.2 innings of work. He allowed eight runs on 12 hits and one walk while striking out two.

 

Tomorrow night the Dodgers head on the road to face Olean at Bradner Stadium. First pitch will be thrown out at 7 p.m.
