The Hornell Dodgers (22-8) split a double header against the Olean Oilers (12-18) winning the first game in extra innings, 5-3 and falling in the second game by a score of 5-4. This was the final meeting of the regular season between the two teams as the Dodgers won the series 7-1.
In the first game the Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring one run in the first two innings before the Dodgers would score 3 in the third to take the lead. Michael Young (UMASS Lowell) hit a triple that scored both Max Modeste (Seattle University) and Andrew McCoy (Benedict). Jared Kapturasky (Mercyhurst) would then ground out to the shortstop that resulted in Young scoring and taking the 3-2 lead.
The Oilers would hit a home run in the 5th to tie the game and eventually force extra innings before the Dodgers would score 2 more runs in the 8th to take the lead (5-3) and eventually the victory. Young would hit his second triple of the game and third in the past two games to plate Ethan Harrison (Trevecca Nazarene). Kapturasky would then hit a single to score Young.
Matt Mulhearn (Webster) was the starter for the Blue and White and went 6 innings striking out 1 while scattering 7 hits and two earned runs. Kapturasky would come in and pitch the final two innings on his way to earning the win as he did not allow a hit and walked only one batter.
Young finished the game with 2 hits and 3 RBI’s while Kapturasky would chip in with 2 RBI’s and Modeste finished with two hits.
In the second game Hornell would carry their momentum from the first game early as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After Harrison led off the game with a double, Young would single him home. Sam Mang (Trevecca Nazarene) then would hit a single and advance to 2nd as both Connor Bailey (Willamette) and Modeste would score on the play.
Olean would eventually tie the game after scoring one run in both the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings. The Dodgers would then respond in the 5th when Chris Cerniglia (Nichols) would groundout to the first basemen and Bailey scored to take the 4-3 lead. However the Oilers would respond in the bottom half of the inning scoring 2 runs and taking the 5-4 lead which held for the remainder of the game.
Jake Miller (Brockport) would make his first career start as he threw 4 great innings allowing 2 earned runs on six hits while striking out one batter. McCoy would then come in from his usually outfield position and face three batters walking each of them as two would eventually score. Michael Wick (Webster) then took over on the mound as he pitched 2 brilliant innings scattering 2 hits while getting two strikeouts.
Jack Brett (Willamette), Bailey and Harrison would all record two hits in the game while Mang would drive in 2 runs in the nightcap.
The Blue and White will be right back in action tomorrow as they will travel to take on the Rochester Ridgemen with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
