The Hornell Dodgers (23-9) rallied late in the game but fell short as the Cortland Crush (18-12) held off the charge and won by a final of 7-4.
Hornell scored a run in the 8th and had the tying runner on deck after scoring 2 in the 9th but fell just short in tonight’s NYCBL crossover action.
Cortland got on the scoreboard first as they scored three runs in the 3rd and then two in the 6th to take the 5-0 lead. The Blue and White would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when Michael Wick (Webster) hit a solo home run to right field to make it a 5-1 game.
After the Crush scored two more runs in the 8th Hornell responded and scored one of their own after Wick forced a walk and then stole 2nd to put himself in scoring position. Ethan Harrison (Trevecca Nazarene) doubled to plate Wick and cut into the lead (7-2).
The Blue and White would not go down without a fight in the 9th as Sam Mang (Trecvecca Nazarene) came in to pinch hit and doubled to left field to score Gregory Nicolia (Gannon). Colin Johnson (Alfred State) would then reach on a fielder’s choice as Mang would score on the play and make it a 7-4 ball game.
Lucas Cornell (Alfred State) was the starting pitcher for the Dodgers and threw six innings, striking out seven batters while allowing 6 hits and 5 earned runs. Maddux Minton (Brockport) then would pitch two frames of work striking out 1 while allowing only 1 hit. Reno Cheshire (Alfred State) came in to pitch the 9th allowing only two walks.
Harrison led the Hornell batters as he recorded two hits on the day while driving in one run. Wick also recorded an RBI while accounting for two runs.
The Dodgers will hit the road tomorrow as they will take on the Syracuse Salt Cats with first pitch at 7 p.m.
