Hornell Dodgers second basemen Ethan Harrison (Trevecca) has been named the NYCBL Defensive Player of the Year while head coach CJ Baker (Lock Haven/Bucknell) has been named the NYCBL Manager of the Year.
Harrison played in 40 games during the regular season and appeared in 391.1 innings of action at second base for the Dodgers. He recorded 99 putouts and 98 assists while only committing four errors on the season. He finished the regular season with a .980 fielding percentage.
"Ethan was special at second base," commented Baker, "at times you take for granted a person's ability to make the routine plays. On top of making the routine plays, he would do something special almost once a game that seperated him as an elite middle infielder. His abilty to put tags down on runners was crucial on close plays. He was such an awesome leader on the field who kept striving to get better each day."
On top of his defensive prowless, Harrison hit .287 during the regular season with 12 doubles, six triples, and 15 RBI. He led the league with 52 stolen bases and 51 runs scored. In the postseason he hit .320 in six games. He drove in six, scored eight times, and stole two more bases.
Baker led the Dodgers to the franchises six league championship, first since 2014. The blue & while won the Western Division regular season crown and clinched the top record in the NYCBL with a 30-12 regular season. Bake and the Dodgers defeated the Genesee Rapids 2 games to 1 in the Western Division Finals and then downed the Syracuse Spartans 2 games to 1 in the NYCBL finals.
Eight Dodgers were named to the midseason All-Star team and the club has been ranked in the Collegiate Summer Baseball national rankings all year climbing as high as #11.
General manager Paul Welker believes the honor is well deserved. "CJ did everything you would want from a summer league coach. He put together a great roster & coaching staff and set goals for the team. He helped lead and mentor the players to reach those goals and was able to get the best out of them. Most importantly he developed lifelong bonds with our players and our community."
The team under the guidance of Baker and his assistants Justin Oney and Tyson Petersheim was top in the NYCBL in runs (325), triples (21), home runs (42), RBI (258), total bases (648), stolen bases (200), slugging percentage (.470), and on-base percentage (.877).
The NYCBL Reliever and Pitcher of the Year will announced tomorrow (8/3).
