Jack Brett (Willamette) and Connor Bailey (Willamette) have been named the 2017 NYCBL Co-Players of the Year.
Brett led the NYCBL with a .399 batting average (57 for 143). He collected nine doubles, one triple, and hit seven homers. He drove in 38 runs, scored 25 runs, and stole seven bases. Brett recorded a .972 fielding percentage while catching and playing first base. In the postseason, Brett battled some injuries but played in all six games and recorded three RBI.
Bailey led the NYCBL with 41 RBI. He hit .364 (56 for 154) with 11 doubles, three triples, and seven homers. He scored 43 times and stole 13 bases. Bailey, who played left field and DH, did not make an errror in any of his 53 chances. On his way to being named co-MVP of the postseason, Bailey hit .440 (11 for 25) with four doubles, a triple, and 5 RBI.
Dodger head coach CJ Baker feels the honor caps the solid seasons for each player. "Jack and Connor were the ideal 4/5 combo. Jack presented a big lefty presence in the middle of our lineup where Connor was extremely comfortable hitting with two strikes and driving runners in with suprising power. Both guys were equally valuable in the field as we saw Connor show off great range in the outfield while Jack became the toughest player on the Dodgers battling through a few freak injuries during which he would refuse to be taken out. It was a blast getting to pencil those two into the lineup day in and day out."
The Dodgers won four of the NYCBL postseason awards. Earlier in this week Ethan Harrison was named defensive player of the year, Jared Kapturasky was named reliever of the year, and CJ Baker was named manager of the year. The All-NYCBL team will be announced next week.
