Demler Tosses Shutout - Dodgers Split with Olean

Drew Demler (Transylvania) threw a complete game shutout in the opener as the Hornell Dodgers split a Sunday doubleheader vs. the Olean Oilers. The Dodgers took the opener 4-0 while the Oilers won the nightcap 8-5.

 

Demler went the distance allowing just six hits (all singles). He walked one and struck out two. This was Demler's third appearance of the week and he finishes the week with nine consecutive scoreless innings.

 

Demler got the runs he need in the 1st inning when the Dodgers scored a pair of runs. Nate Tholl (Webster) was hit by a pitch and went to third on a hit and run single by Keegan Tyrell (Concordia Chicago). Ted Leathersich (UMass Lowell) hit a sac fly to score Tholl and Joey Faudskar (Wilamette) singled two batters later to plate Tyrell. 

 

In the 3rd, Leathersich was hit by pitch, stole second and scored on a RBI single by Kyler Kent (Webster). The Dodgers added an insurance run in the 6th, when Matt Staker (Webster) scored on a single by Tholl.

 

Kent, Faudskar, and Staker were each 2 for 3 on the day as the Dodgers collected 10 hits in the game. Kent and Faudskar each collected a RBI.


Michael Beimer was the lone Oiler with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3.

 

In the nightcap, the Oilers put together four 2-run innings. They took a 2-0 lead in the 1st on a solo homer by Brian Tagoe and a run scoring double play. They made it 4-0 in the 2nd when they scored on a pair of balks.

 

Tyrell cut the lead to 4-1 in the 3rd with a RBI single but the Oilers plated two more in the 4th to push their lead to 6-1. Jimmy Webb collected a two-out, two RBI double.

 

The Dodgers rallied in the 4th and 5th innings to make it a game. They scored a run after a pair of errors in the 4th and cut the lead with three runs in the 5th. Caleb Broughton (Bucknell) delivered a two-run single and Josh Laurie (Alfred State) followed with a RBI single to right center. The Dodgers tried a double steal that would have tied the game but the Oilers defended it perfectly and threw the would be tying run out at the plate.

 

In the 6th, the Oilers added two big insurance runs on two-out RBI hits by Tagoe and Webb. Braydon Nelson held the Dodger offense down the rest of the way to secure the victory.

 

Tyrell was 3 for 4 with a RBI to lead the Dodgers while Tagoe was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and Webb was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI for the Oilers. Nelson allowed one hit in 2.1 innings of relief to earn the save for the Oilers.

 

The Dodgers head to Rochester on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest vs. the Ridgemen. This will be the final meeting of the season between the two teams.
