Nate Tholl (Webster) delivered the game winning hit with with two-outs in the 9th as the Hornell Dodgers defeated the Wellsville Nitros 4-3 on Friday.
The Dodgers got on the board in the 3rd when Brody Burdett (Alfred State) and Matt Staker (Webster) drew walks. After a sac bunt by Tholl, Keegan Tyrell (Concordia Chicago) drove home Burdett on a fielders choice.
Burdett made it 2-0 in the 4th when his line drive sac fly to center scored Joey Faudskar (Wilamette) who had led off the inning with a walk.
Tholl added an insurance run in the 7th when he connected on a RBI double to right field to score Staker who led off the inning with a walk.
The Nitros scored their lone runs of the contest in the 7th when Andres Perez walked and Chandler Palyas singled setting the table for John David Isbell lifted a three-run homer to right center.
Neither team could score in the 8th but the Dodgers scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the 9th. Burdett drew a leadoff walk. Staker advanced pinch runner Matt Fauth (Concordia Chicago) to second with a sac bunt. Tholl collected his third hit of the day when he sent a single to right center to score Fauth.
Drew Demler (Transylvania) came out of the bullpen after a stellar start by Jake Dunn (Finger Lakes CC) and got three ground balls to earn the save. Dunn allowed seven hits and three runs in eight innings of work. He walked two and struck out nine.
Tholl was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead the Dodgers. The Dodgers were held to just six hits but drew seven walks.
The Dodgers end the season with a pair of home contests. They take on the Olean Oilers on Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Wellsville Nitros at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
