The Hornell Dodgers offense was clicking early and they were able to hold off a late comeback attempt by the Wellsville Nitros as they earned a season finale 10-7 victory. The Dodgers end the season on a three-game winning streak.
The Nitros got on the board in the 1st when Cyrus Grimes hit a RBI ground out to score John David Isbell.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Dodgers were able to put up two of their own runs. Nate Tholl (Webster) led off the game with a single and scored on a balk and Drew Hefner (Charleston) followed later in the inning with a RBI single.
Dusty Rogers tied it up in the 2nd with a RBI single but the Dodgers answered back with singles by Tyler Marshall (Amherst), Josh Laurie (Alfred State), and Matt Staker (Webster) to load the bases. One batter later, Keegan Tyrell (Concordia Chicago) sent a pitch onto Adsit Street for a grand slam.
Drew Demler (Transylvania) started a stretch of four scoreless innings in the 3rd and the Dodgers added to their lead with more runs in the 3rd and 4th. Staker had a RBI single in the 3rd while Hefner collected a RBI single, Marshall hit a sac fly, and Laurie connected on a RBI double in the 4th.
The game remained 10-2 until the 7th when the Nitros started a late-game comeback plating three runs off of back to back doubles hit by Grimes and Williams. John Benevolent drew a bases loaded walk and a third run scored on a double play.
In the 8th, Wellsville added two more runs to cut it to 10-7. Preston Stringer came through with the clutch two-run single in the inning.
The Nitros had the tying run at the plate when Chris McDonnell (Finger Lakes CC) recorded the final out of the contest to earn the save.
Demler was awarded the win on the mound for the Dodgers, his 5th of the season, after pitching six solid innings. He allowed two runs and struck out seven batters. Christopher McDonnell (Finger Lakes CC) pitching one inning and striking out three batters.
Wellsville reliever Connor Woods kept the Nitros in the game with four scoreless innings of relief.
The Dodgers collected seventeen hits overall tonight, Tholl and Staker led the Dodgers with three hits apiece and Tyrell collected four RBIs as well.
The Dodgers complete the 2018 season, their 25th season of play in collegiate summer baseball, with a 15-27 overall record. The team led the league in batting average finishing the season with a .310 team average.
