The Hornell Dodgers could not fully rally from a 9-4 deficit as they finished yesterday's suspended game vs. the Mansfield Destroyers on Saturday afternoon. The Dodgers fell 9-8 in the contest.
The Dodgers trailed 9-4 as action resumed this afternoon. The Destroyers were able to get out of a bases loaded jam to start the resumption but Kevin Higgins started the rally in the 6th when he lifted a solo homer. He came back up in the 7th with a pair of runners on and drilled another homer over the left field fence to cut the lead to 9-8 with two outs.
Andrew Littlefield stepped up next and drilled a pitch deep to right but Andrew Walker was able to track it down just before the fence to end the contest.
In the portion of the game played yesterday, the Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on sac flies by Higgins and Littlefield. The Destroyers got a run back in the bottom of the 1st on an error.
The Dodgers threatened but couldn't score in the 2nd before a thunderstorm moved in and forced nearly an hour delay. After the delay, the Destroyers collected three runs on four hits to take the lead for the first time.
The Dodgers threatened again in the 4th but couldn't score and the Destroyers answered with five runs on five hits to make it 9-2.
As light was dwindling, the Dodgers scored a pair of runs in the 5th. Brody Burdett hit a sac fly and Josh Laurie scored on a wild pitch. Hornell had the bases loaded when umpire suspended the game due to darkness.
Higgins finished 2 for 4 with 5 RBI while Matt Martinez and Nick Wimmers were each 2 for 4.
The Dodgers take on the Genesee Rapids at 7 p.m. in the regularly scheduled contest.
