Oilers take game one

Olean scored in seven of their eight at bats as they defeated Hornell 13-2 in game one of the NYCBL Western Division Championship series.

 

Olean scored two in the 1st and were held scoreless in the 2nd. Hornell got on the board in the 3rd when Jack Loftus (Western New England) and Max Schmarder (Tusculum) collected singles. Loftus scored on a grounder that misplayed by the Oiler pitcher. Hornell threatened for more but was unable to plate the tying run.

 

Olean scored a run in the bottom of the 3rd and added to their lead with four runs in the 4th. They scored single runs in the 5th and the 6th. They made it 11-1 with a pair of runs in the 7th.

 

Hornell got their second run of the game in the 8th when Torrey Roper (Indiana U of PA) tripled and scored on a sac fly by Bryson Rigsby (Webster).

 

Olean capped the scoring with a pair of runs in the 8th.

 

Roper finished 3 for 4 on the day. He had three of the Steamers five hits in the game.

 

Dylan Vincent was 3 for 3 with 4 RBI to pace Olean. His three-run homer in the 4th was the biggest blow to Hornell in the game. Liam Devine pitched seven solid innings to earn the victory on the mound.

 

Hornell will host Olean in game two of the Western Finals tomorrow at Maple City Park. First pitch is at 7 p.m. A Hornell victory will force a game three in Olean on Thursday.
