Steamers Rally to Win

The Hornell Steamers fought from behind for a crucial 12-10 victory over the Genesee Rapids on Tuesday evening.

 

Genesee jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Bobby Sellers (Alfred State) hit a two-out, two-RBI single in the 2nd to get on the board.

 

The Rapids scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd but Tyler Curtis (Fredonia) collected a two-out RBI single and Luca Ciaramitaro (Siena) followed with a two-run single in the 3rd to make it 6-5.

 

A RBI groundout in the 3rd made it 7-5 before Curtis hit a sac fly in the 5th to make it a one-run game.

 

Spencer Crane collected a two-run single in the 5th and Dalton Cody hit a sac fly to make it 10-6.

 

Jason Story (Utica) hit a two-out RBI single in the 6th but neither team would score again until the 9th.

 

Tim Burns (Maine Presque Isle) and Justin Swanson (North Park) drew walks to lead off the 9th. After a pop out, Curtis drew a walk a walk to load the bases. Ciaramitaro followed by drawing a walk to drive in Burns. After a strikeout, Matt Wessels (Iona) drew a walk on a 3-2 count and on a 2-2 count Ryan Hill (Mercyhurst) was hit by a pitch to tie it up. Story gave the Steamers the lead when his fly ball was misplayed and dropped for a two-run double.

 

Nathan O'Brochta (Fredonia) retired the Rapids 1-2-3 in the bottom of 9th to secure the victory. O'Brochta pitched the final 4.2 inning and allowed just one run on one hit. He walked one and struck out two.

 

Curtis was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI, Ciaramitaro was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, and Story was 2 for 6 with a 3 RBI. Hornell drew nine walks and were hit by two pitches.

 

Crane was 4 for 5 with 4 RBI to lead the Rapids. Eli MacDonald and Aidan Stern each had two hits.

 

Hornell travels to Olean to take on the 1st place Oilers in a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
