Oilers take two from Hornell

Olean used big 2nd innings in both games of a doubleheader as they swept Hornell, 7-2 and 4-3, on Wednesday evening.

 

In the opener, Olean scored six runs highlighted by a Blaise Zeiders grand slam to take the lead. They added a run in the 2nd but Hornell kept them off the board the rest of the way.

 

In the 4th, Hornell scored a pair of runs. Bobby Bartlett (North Park) hit a RBI groundout and Emmanuel McClain (Hilbert) followed with a RBI single. Hornell had chances the rest of the way but could not plate any more runs.

 

Justin Swanson (North Park) was the lone Steamer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4 with a double.

 

Olean scored a run in the 1st to jump ahead. In the 2nd, Bobby Sellers (Alfred State) collected a RBI single and Matt Wessels (Iona) followed with a RBI double to give the Steamers a 2-1 lead.

 

The Oilers answered back with three of their own in the 2nd but were held off the board the rest of the way.

 

In the 6th, Hornell loaded the bases and collected a run on a RBI groundout by Tyler Curtis (Fredonia) to cut the lead to one. The Steamers could not push across the tying run in the 6th or the 7th.

 

Wessels tossed five innings allowing just two hits and four earned runs. He walked five and struck out four. Gates Miller (Alfred State) threw a scoreless 6th inning. 

 

Hornell hosts Dansville on Thursday evening. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
