Steamers win tight battle with Olean

Jackson Legg (LSU Eunice) delivered a RBI single in the top of the 9th to lift the Hornell Steamers to a 6-5 victory over the Olean Oilers on Monday night. The Steamers are now 13-6-1 on the season.

 

Hornell scored the first runs of the game when Devin Mersmann (Alfred State) delivered a RBI single to score newcomer Nicolas Schwing (Holmes JC) in the 2nd.

 

Olean answered back with a pair of runs in the 2nd and made it 3-1 with another run in the 3rd. Hornell cut it to a one-run game in the 5th when Mersmann doubled, stole third, and scored when the catcher's throw hit Markus Brehm's (Finger Lakes CC) helmet.

 

Hornell tied the game in the 7th when Elijah NIchols (Arkansas State) collected a two-out single and came all the way around to score on an errant pickoff attempt to first.

 

Hornell grabbed back the lead in the 8th. Rustin Pope (Coastal Alabama North CC) hit a RBI single and scored a batter later following an Oiler error.

 

Olean did not go away and was able to load the bases and Michael Norton delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to tie the game.

 

In the 9th, Nichols drew a leadoff walk and went to second after a sac bunt by Braden McLin (Louisiana Christian). Legg delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit with a single to left.

 

Alex Dupuy (LSU Eunice) got the first two outs in the 9th and after a pair of runners got on base struck out the Oilers final chance to seal the victory.

 

Dupuy pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the win. He allowed three hits while striking out three. Wes Carter (Webster) was solid on the mound. He pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

 

Mersmann was 2 for 4 with a RBI, Nichols was 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored, and Legg finished 2 for 5 with the game-winning RBI.

 

JP Pennella was 3 for 5 for Olean (11-8) while Norton was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.

 

Hornell travels to Houghton University on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader with the first place Genesee Rapids.
