The Hornell Steamers scored two in the 8th and five more in the 9th to earn a 13-11 victory over the Horseheads on Thursday afternoon.
Alex Dupuy (LSU Eunice) got Hornell on the board in the 1st when he lifted a solo homer to left but Kyler Hickman tied it up in the 2nd with a solo homer of his own.
Brody Langlotz (Gulf Coast CC) hit a RBI single in the 3rd before Hickman tied it when he scored on a throwing error in the 4th.
Braden McLin (Louisiana Christian) hit a sac fly in the 5th, Dupuy scored when he stole home on a double steal, and Finn Ellis (U of Charleston) capped the three run inning with a RBI single.
Hickman connected on his second solo homer in the 6th and Arnett made it 5-4 with a RBI single.
Jackson Legg (LSU Eunice) scored on a fielding error in the 7th.
Horseheads took their only lead of the game in the bottom of the 7th when Jason Smith hit a homer and Jack Carozzoni followed with a RBI single.
In the 8th, Wyatt Argentieri (Genesee CC) hit a solo homer to right field to tie it and a few batters later Legg hit a RBI single to right field.
In the 9th, Elijah Nichols (Arkansas State) drew a bases loaded walk to add an insurance run before Dupuy made it 13-7 when he launched a grand slam to left center.
Horsheads did not go away and plated four runs in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Franco hit a RBI single followed by a RBI single by Carazonni. Franco scored on a wild pitch and Carazonni scored on an Arnett sac fly. Dupuy struck out the final batter to close the game.
Dupuy was 3 for 5 with 5 RBI and got the final three outs of the game. Ellis was 2 for 3 and Nichols was 2 for 5 with a RBI. Trey Slawson (Alfred State) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. Logan Hoyt (Alfred State) got four outs and Wes Carter (Webster) allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Carter earned the victory to improve to 4-0.
Hornell wraps up the regular season with a pair of home games this weekend. They host the Olean Oilers on Friday and the Horseheads Hitmen on Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m.
Hornell had a 26-7-1 record. The team has clinched the Western Division Regular Season Championship and the best regular season record in the entire NYCBL>
They will start the 2024 playoffs with a home game on Tuesday, July 23rd vs. the winner of the #4 vs. #5 battle that will take place on Monday (7/22). First pitch will be at 7 p.m.
