Steamers wrap up regular season with win

The Hornell Steamers wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a 9-3 victory over the Horseheads Hitmen. The Steamers finish the regular season with a 28-7-1 record.

 

The Steamers got on the board in the 2nd when Nicolas Schwing (Holmes JC) scored on a fielding error. 

 

Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) added to the lead with a sac fly in the 3rd and Schwing made it 3-0 with a RBI single.

 

Brehm collected another RBI with a double down the right field line in the 4th.

 

Horseheads cut the Hornell lead to 4-3 with three runs in the 5th. Brady Morrell scored on a throwing error, Jackson Hubbard and AJ Brotz followed with RBI singles.

 

Hornell put the game out of reach with five runs in the 6th. Brehm collected a RBI infield single, Alex Dupuy (LSU Eunice) hit a long RBI single, Jackson Legg (LSU Eunice) collected a RBI groundout, and Schwing hit a two-run double.

 

The pitchers kept the offenses quiet the rest of the way.

 

Brehm and Schwing both finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.

 

Wes Carter (Webster) got the win with four innings of one-hit work. Eli Rampala-Matthews (Webster) and Jeremy Yanow (Webster) threw one shutout inning each and Cowan Alfonso (Louisiana Christian) struck out five while allowing just one hit and one walk in the final two innings.

 

Hornell will host a NYCBL Western Division Semifinal game on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. They will play the winner of the #4 Olean vs. #5 Salamanca first round contest that will be played in Olean on Monday evening.
