Hayden Hernandez (LSU Eunice) hit a pair of solo homers but it wasn't enough as the Hornell Steamers fell 4-2 to the Dansville Gliders on Saturday afternoon.
Dansville got on the board in the 1st inning on a RBI single by Justin Colpack.
Hernandez tied it up in the top of the 2nd when he lifted his first of two homers over the left field fence.
The Gliders manufactured a pair of runs in the 3rd to take a lead they would never give up. Emmett McLean reached on a bunt single, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error. He came around to score on a double by Kade Keown. Keown scored moments later when he stole third and scored when the throw went into left field.
The game remained 3-1 until the bottom of the 8th, when Colpack added an insurance run with a solo homer over the Glider bullpen.
With one out in the 9th, Hernandez connected on his second long ball of the game to cut the lead to 4-2. Hornell had the tying run at bat when Owen Simoneoux induced a groundball to end the game.
Hernandez was 3 for 4 with the two homers and a double on the day to pace the Steamers six-hit offense. Tommy DiFranco (Clarkson) allowed two earned runs on four hits in five innings of work, Mike Protz (Fredonia) pitched two scoreless innings, and Jared Ainsworth (Cobleskill) allowed one run in one inning of work.
McLean, Colpack, and Jeremy Aylward all collected two hits for the Gliders (4-3) while Chase Donahue allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings of work to earn the victory. Simoneoux recorded the final six outs for the save.
Hornell heads to Salamanca on Sunday afternoon for their first battle with the Lizards. First pitch is slated for 4:44 p.m.
