Oilers win pitching dual

The Olean Oilers scored three in the 7th inning to win a pitchers dual 3-1 over Hornell on Friday night. The Oilers improve to 6-2 while the Steamers fall to 6-7-1.

 

Chris Gross (Houghton) and Kiayuan Baskerville matched zeros on the scoreboard until Hornell got on the board in the 6th inning. Qingyang Feng (Houghton) singled to lead off the inning and came around to score three batters later when Dalton Groves (Webster) singled to right field.

 

Olean collected back-to-back doubles to lead off the 7th and knock Gross out of the game. JT Smith tied it with a groundout and Bryce Neeley gave the Oilers with a single to left. Dustin Hendrix added an insurance run when he drove in Neeley on a fielder's choice.

 

Hornell mounted a comeback attempt in the 8th by loading the bases but Luis Arreola got out of the jam.

 

Gross allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work while walking two and striking out three. Baskerville allowed just one run on four hits in six innings. Arreola recorded the final five outs to register the save.

 

Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) and Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer) each collected doubles for Hornell while Chase Fisher was 2 for 4 for Olean.

 

Hornell hosts Horseheads on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
