The Hornell Steamers took down the Rapids Tuesday night, 11-4, thanks to a huge six-run 5th inning.
The Steamers got the scoring started in the 1st inning, scoring three runs on an RBI double by Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer), who scored on an error, and an RBI single by Austin Ellis (Northwestern State).
The Steamers continued their scoring in the 2nd, scoring two runs on an RBI single by Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes Community College) and a throwing error.
The Rapids answered back in the 3rd, scoring a run of their own on an RBI double by Troy Chamberlin.
Hornell had a big 5th inning, scoring six runs on two RBI walks with the bases loaded by Logan Hoyt (Hilbert College) and Cassidy, a passed ball, a two-run single by Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State), and an RBI single by Ellis.
The Rapids scored three runs in the 6th on an RBI single by Ritz Nonomura and a clutch two-run double by Cadence Varner with two outs.
Jackson Hubbard led the Steamers on the mound, pitching seven innings, giving up one earned run on six hits, and striking out seven batters.
The Steamers offense was led by Ellis and McEnroe, who both had two hits with two RBIs, and Brehm, who had two hits and one RBI.
The Rapids were led by Varner, who had a two-run double, and Chamberlin, who had an RBI double.
The Steamers are back at Maple City Park tomorrow for a doubleheader against the Watertown Rapids. The first pitch is at 4 p.m.
