A pair of four-run innings helped lift the Hornell Steamers to a 11-6 victory on the 4th of July at Maple City Park. The Steamers improve to 10-12-3 on the year.
Salamanca got on the board in the 1st on a RBI single by Matt Smith but Hornell answered right back with a RBI groundout by Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC).
The Lizards took a 3-1 lead with a single run in the 2nd and the 3rd. Frank Kula collected a RBI single in the 2nd and Connor Smith scored on a double play in the 3rd.
Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State) hit a sac fly in the 3rd to cut the lead to one before the Steamers plated four in the 4th. Will Dixon (LSU Eunice) hit a RBI single, Dylan Walsh (Brandeis) hit a sac fly, and Wyatt Argentieri (Genesee CC) and Brehm scored on throwing errors.
Salamanca tied it right back up in the 5th. Matt Smith collected another RBI single, Connor Smith scored on a throwing error, and Harley Hoag hit a sac fly to tie it up at 6-6.
In the bottom of the 5th, Argentieri gave the Steamers the lead for good with a RBI single. Brehm followed with a RBI single of his own and Walsh scored on a fielding error before Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer) hit a RBI triple to make it 10-6.
McEnroe added an insurance run in the 7th with a sac fly.
Brehm was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI while Cassidy and Dixon were each 3 for 5 with a RBI. Walsh and Argentieri both collected a pair of hits. Hornell finished with 17 total hits.
Sebastian Ecker (Montclair State) earned the win with six solid innings in his first start of the summer. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs while walking two and striking out seven. Qingyang Feng (Houghton) earned the save with three shutout innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out three.
Kula and Matt Smith were each 3 for 5 for the Lizards (8-11-3).
Hornell begins a two-game road trip on Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest at Houghton vs. the Genesee Rapids.
