Strong pitching lifts Steamers past Lizards

Dominant pitching led the Hornell Steamers to a 8-2 win against the Salamanca Lizards on Wednesday night. The Steamers move to 12-13-3 while the Lizards fall to 10-14-3.

 

The Steamers got the scoring started in the 1st inning on a two-run single by Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State).

 

The Lizards evened the score in the 2nd, scoring two runs on an RBI single by Parker Drees and tied it on a throwing error.

 

The Steamers took the lead right back in the 3rd, scoring a run on an RBI single by Austin Ellis (Northwestern State).

 

Hornell added to their lead in the 5th, scoring two runs on a throwing error and an RBI single by Will Dixon (LSU Eunice).

 

Salamanca loaded the bases with no outs in the 7th, but Steamers starter Mike Protz (Fredonia) was able to work out of the jam, striking out two batters.

 

Hornell added to their lead in the 7th, scoring two runs on two bases-loaded walks to Jacob Charlson (Webster) and Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes Community College).

 

The Steamers got their final run in the 8th inning on an error.

 

Quingyang Feng (Houghton) pitched two shutout innings with five strikeouts in relief to maintain the lead for the Steamers while Protz picked up the win on the mound. Protz allowed one earned run on six hits in seven innings of work. He walked two and struck out six.

 

McEnroe led the Steamers to victory, racking up five hits with two RBIs and Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer), Dalton Groves (Webster), and Wyatt Argentieri (Genesee Community College) picked up two hits apiece. 

 

The Steamers are back in action on Friday, July 11th, against the Dansville Gliders at Maple City Park. The first pitch is at 7 p.m.
