The Hornell Steamers stranded 11 on base and fell 6-4 in a close battle vs. the Genesee Rapids on Sunday afternoon.
The Rapids jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings. Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) hit a RBI groundout to short to score Dylan Walsh (Brandeis) in the 3rd to get Hornell on the board.
Genesee added a run in the 3rd to make it 5-1. In the 6th, Ty Kenney (Houghton) hit a RBI double, Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer) hit a RBI double in the 7th, and Asher Friedman (Alcorn State) followed with a RBI single to right to cut the lead to 5-4.
Hornell stranded a pair of runners on base in both the 7th and 8th. Genesee added an insurance run in the 7th.
Friedman led the Steamers (13-15-3) with a 3 for 5 day while Cassidy, Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State), and Walsh collected two hits each.
Gio Lonero was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI to lead Genesee.
Monday is the 2025 NYCBL All-Star game at 4 p.m. in Syracuse. The Steamers will be represented by Markus Brehm, Caleb Cassidy, Austin Ellis, Hayden Hernandez, Cooper McEnroe, and Caleb Wilson.
