The Hornell Steamers took down the Genesee Rapids 9-8 in fashionable style on Tuesday night while debuting their City Connect uniforms. The Steamers move to 14-15-3 on the year while the Rapids fall to 22-10-1.
The Steamers got the scoring started in the 1st, scoring three runs on a two-run double by Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer) and an RBI groundout by Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State).
The Rapids answered right back in the 2nd, scoring a run of their own on an RBI single by Michael Frausto.
Hornell tacked on three more runs in the 4th on a two-RBI triple by Quingyang Feng (Houghton) and an RBI single by Cassidy.
The Steamers had another three-run inning in the 5th on an RBI single by Ty Kenney (Houghton), a bases-loaded walk by Feng, and a fielder's choice RBI by Asher Friedman (Alcorn State)
Genesee added three runs of their own in the 6th on a passed ball, an RBI single by Diego Cancel Otero, and a fielder's choice.
The Rapids inched closer to the Steamer's lead in the 8th, scoring four runs on an RBI single by Otero, a two-run double by Caden Walker, and another RBI single by Braeden Dyck. Mike Pasquesi (Webster) came in with the bases loaded and two outs and recorded a strikeout to get out of the jam.
Steamers pitcher Mike Protz (Fredonia) picked up the win on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits, and striking out two batters, while Pasquesi picked up the save with 1.1 innings of work.
Leading the charge on offense for the Steamers were Feng, who had three hits, two extra-base hits, and three RBIs, and Cassidy, who had three hits, an extra-base hit, and three RBIs.
Genesee was led by Dyck, who was 3-4 with an RBI, and Otero, who was 2-5 with two RBIs.
The Steamers are back in action on Wednesday, July 16th, when they face the Salamanca Lizards at Salamanca High School. The first pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
