Steamers walk-off in opener

Caleb Cassidey (Pomona Pitzer) delivered a one-out, two-run walk-off single to right to lift the Hornell Steamers to a 6-5 victory over the Olean Oilers in the season opener for both teams. 

 

Olean got on the board first in the 2nd inning when Dustin Hendrix collected a RBI groundout. Matthew Cody (Louisiana Christian) tied it up in the bottom of the inning when he hit a RBI double down the right field. Dylan Walsh (Brandeis) followed with a RBI single to center to score Cody.

 

Caden Wolfley tied it in 4th when he drove in Bryce Neeley.

 

Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State) connected on a two-run homer onto Adsit Street to give the Steamers a 4-2 lead.

 

Olean scored the next three runs in the game to take back the lead. Wolfley collected a RBI groundout in the 6th and a pair of runs scored in the 7th on a fielding error.

 

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 9th. Wyatt Argentieri (Genesee CC), Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC), and McEnroe collected infield singles. Cassidy came to the plate with one out and delivered a RBI single right in front of the right fielder to send the Maple City Park crowd home happy.

 

McEnroe was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Dalton Groves (Webster) was 2 for 3, and Wilfred Santiago (St. Peters) was 2 for 4. Walsh and Brehm were each 2 for 5.

 

Chase Fisher collected two of the three hits (2 for 4) for the Oilers.

 

Sebastian Ecker (Montclair State) earned the win with a scoreless 9th inning. Michael Pasquesi (Webster) allowed one hit and one run in three innings of work, Tommy DiFranco (Clarkson) allowed one earned run in three innings, and Caleb Wilson (Finger Lakes CC) allowed two unearned runs in two innings of work.

 

Hornell hits the road for the first time tomorrow for a 2 p.m. contest vs. the or\seheads Hitmen.
