Hornell shuts out Horseheads

The Hornell Steamers took advantage of their opportunities and five pitchers allowed just six hits as they shutout the Horseheads Hitmen on Sunday afternoon. Hornell is 2-0 on the young season while the Hitmen are 1-1.

 

Hornell loaded the bases in the 1st and got on the board when Jacob Charlson (Webster) scored when the Hitmen turned a double play.

 

In the bottom of the 2nd the Steamers cut the tying run down at home plate and then scored four in the 3rd to take a commanding lead. Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer) collected a RBI groundout, Will Dixon (LSU Eunice) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Wyatt Argentieri (Genesee CC) collected a two-run single up the middle.

 

Austin Ellis (Northwestern State) collected a sac fly in the 4th and delivered two more runs with a RBI single up the middle in the 6th. 

 

Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) capped the scoring in the 7th with a RBI fielder's choice.

 

Toby Gleeson-Payne (LSU Eunice) allowed four hits and two walks in five shutout innings. He struck out a pair. Andrew Davis (Genesee CC) struck out a pair in the 6th, Jared Ainsworth (Cobleskill), Tyler Vogel (Niagara CCC), and Qingyang Feng (Houghton) each struck out a batter in 1-2-3 innings.

 

Brehm and Argentieri were each 2 for 5 while Dylan Walsh (Brandeis) came off the bench and was 2 for 2. Ellis led the team with three RBI. Hornell drew eight walks and was hit by five pitches.

 

Hemi Humphries was 2 for 3 for Horsheads and was the lone Hitmen with multiple hits.

 

Hornell has Monday off but returns to the road on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest with the Genesee Rapids.
