Hornell and Sherrill Split

Hornell and Sherrill split an interdivisional doubleheader match-up on Wednesday. The Silversmiths won the opener 5-4 in eight innings before the Steamers bounced back for a 9-0 win in the nightcap

 

In the nightcap, the Steamers got going quickly. After a leadoff triple by Jacob Charlson (Webster), Dylan Walsh (Brandeis) delivered a RBI groundout.

 

The scoring continued in the 3rd inning on an RBI double by Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State) and a two-RBI single by Caleb Cassidy (Pomona Pitzer), extending the Steamers lead to 4-0.

 

The Steamers were not done, tacking on three more runs in the 5th inning on a Will Dixon (LSU Eunice) RBI double, a Ty Kenney (Houghton) RBI groundout, and a sac fly Dalton Groves (Webster)

 

The Steamers tacked on their final insurance runs in the 6th inning on a two-run home run by Davis Avera (Gulf Coast CC) and went on to win the game 9-0.

 

The Steamers were led by a dominant performance on the mound by Michael Pasquesi (Webster), who pitched six innings, allowing no runs on just two hits and striking out eight. Jared Ainsworth (Cobleskill) quickly got a 1-2-3 in the 7th to cap the game.

 

Charlson, Dixon, and Walsh all had 2 hits in the win.

 

In the opener, Sherrill got on the board in the 1st on a three-run home run off the bat of Cooper Angily (Rhodes College).

 

The Steamers would answer back in the bottom of the 2nd, tacking on two runs on an RBI single from Wyatt Argentieri (Genesee CC) and a sacrifice fly by Walsh.

 

Following three scoreless innings from both teams, the Steamers took the lead on a McEnroe RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Hayden Hernandez (LSU Eunice).

 

The Silversmiths rallied for one run in the 7th inning following an RBI single by Caleb Vacchiano (University of Maine) to tie the game at four.

 

The Silversmiths did not stop in extras as they tacked on one more run in the 8th inning off a clutch two-out RBI double from Harssh Ramayanam Venkkat (Brown University), giving them the lead.

 

The Steamers battled in the bottom of the 8th, putting a runner on. However,  the Silversmiths were able to turn the double play to end the game.

 

Hornell was led by starting pitcher Chris Gross (Houghton), who pitched four innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters. The Steamers also had some help from Markus Brehm and McEnroe, who were both 2-4.

 

The Silversmiths were led by Ramayanam Venkkat, who was 2-5 with a clutch RBI in extra innings, as well as Kyle Moshier (Roanoke College) and Vacchiano, who were both 2-4.

 

The Steamers continue a three-day homestand on Thursday when the Horseheads Hitmen visit Maple City Park at 7 p.m.
