Steamers race past Hitmen

Hornell improved to 4-2 on the young season with a 16-1 victory over the Horseheads Hitmen on Thursday evening. 

 

The Steamers scoring started in the 3rd  inning on an RBI walk by Davis Avera (Gulf Coast CC), giving them an early 1-0 lead.

 

The Steamers did not stop there tacking on four more runs in the 4th inning on a clutch three-run double by Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) and an RBI single by Jacob Charlson (Webster) extending the Steamers lead to five.'

 

Hornell would follow up their fourth inning with a two-run 5th inning on a Charlson two-run single giving them a seven-run lead going into the 6th inning.

 

The Steamers erupted for nine runs in the 6th inning. The scoring was started on an RBI walk by Austin Ellis (Northwestern State) leading to a Logan Hoyt (Hilbert College) two-run double, RBI singles by Brehm, Charlson, and Cooper McEnroe (Northwestern State), two runs on a wild-pitch, and an RBI double by Avera. 

 

The Hitmen picked up a run in the top half of the 7th inning on an RBI groundout by Clay Cook (Kalamazoo College), cutting the Steamers lead to 16-1.

 

The Steamers were led by a dominant pitching performance by Tyler Vogel (Niagara CCC), going six innings strong. He allowed just two hits while tacking on four strikeouts.

 

On the offensive side for the Steamers, Charlson was 4-4 with four RBI's, Brehm was 3-4 with four RBI's, and Hayden Hernandez (LSU Eunice) was 3-3 with a pair of doubles. 

 

Hornell is back home tomorrow when they take on the Genesee Rapids at 7 p.m. The game is the team's annual Baseball and Books event with free books for school aged children.
